A day in Santiago
We pretty much conquered Santiago in 4 hours, which means we’re currently on our 2nd bottle of Petit Verdot for lunch.
The joys if travel
Snowstorms wreak havoc on our way down here.
Travel advisories and strikes have us fleeing to Santiago a day early. No pinguinos :(.
And now, a massive storm heading straight for home may leave us stranded in Miami.
Oy.
Good thing we love traveling so much!!
Backlog
There is so much to show and tell about our trip, but finding wireless internet here is challenging at best. I plan to post a ton once we return home.
We are now sitting in our lodge atop a hill in Puerto Natales, looking out over the water, it’s 11:30pm and it’s only just within the past half hour gotten dark enough to catch a glimpse of the southern hemisphere’s stars. I love...
We’re at the end of the world and loving (mostly) every minute. Patagonia is STUNNING.

In writing: never again
Not once have I had a good experience flying into/through JFK. Tonight is no exception. I’ve said many times I will never fly through there again, but the last straw was our trip to Morocco in 2008. However, here we are, delayed, with minimal time to catch our connecting flight to Santiago. Fingers crossed we, and our ever-important luggage make it!
I have plans to fly through one more...
The prep
Packing for a trip always proves stressful for some reason. And now, with the upcoming Patagonia trip, my apartment looks like a tornado ripped through, with clothes and packs and camera gear and camping/hiking equipment strewn everywhere. Oof!

Marathon Monday morning madness
On our early morning walk, the pooch and I encountered thousands of runners, with their lemon-lime colored bags, as they descended upon the Boston Common to board the buses lined up on Tremont Street to take them to the starting line in Hopkinton for the 114th Boston Marathon. Happy Patriots’ Day!
Walking around and enjoying SOWA’s First Friday open art studios and galleries. Loving how lively and artsy Boston is tonight!

Aspirin please
For the record, I’m not one who gets to the airport 3 hours early before a flight. I don’t go as far as to be so late that they are paging me because they are closing the doors any minute (not all the time, anyway!), but I generally leave the minimum amount of time that won’t give me agita. Earlier today, our flight from Mendoza was cancelled, and the flights the rebooked us on...
Due West
Driving west on route 7 towards Chile in our tiny rental car, we’re headed straight for the stunning mountains, many with tons of snow on them, with vineyards surrounding us. Bliss.
Blood thirsty
Under ordinary conditions, if there’s a mosquito within 200 meters, it will find me and attack with fury. In Argentina, it’s a whole new ballgame. Even Deet isn’t working. My left leg seems to be the real feast, completely welted up. These suckers are no joke.
You've got to be kidding me
I ran out of the hotel to get in the cab that Jay was already in, and when I saw the driver, I stopped in my tracks. It’s the same lunatic from yesterday. Yes, the hotel probably has contracts with certain taxi drivers, but still. Out of all of them, we get by far the most certifiable guy two days in a row?! Unbelievable. This guy had to have been a race car driver back in the day. He speeds...
9th
The 9th biggest city in the world, BA reminds me of other major cities, yet has a flavor of its own. It reminds me of Bangkok, in that there are fancy upscale neighborhoods, but also sketchy parts where you don’t want to be stuck in after dusk. It reminds me of Paris with its gorgeous intricate architecture at every turn. It reminds me of Manhattan, where it doesn’t really come alive...
Rome has met its match
It’s official. I haven’t gripped the door handle this much since my last visit to Rome. The taxi drivers in Buenos Aires are insane! I repeat - insane!! Earlier today, en route from Palermo SoHo to La Boca, I swear we cheated death, or at least a serious fender bender, no less than ten times. Buckle up!
Off the books
There’s nothing better than finding a place not found in any guidebook that delivers not only a meal to die for at an affordable price (if not feeling like I’m robbing them blind) but also an equally unforgettable atmosphere.
Plans to return
I don’t remember reading about the entry fee ($130 per American citizen), but I certainly don’t mind paying to get into a foreign country. The plus is that it’s good for ten years. Not that I needed an excuse to come back, but this just makes it a no-brainer. I’m already dreaming of ice treks and climbing the Andes!
Nothing starts a vacation quite like a free upgrade to First Class. Just the first leg though; soon I’ll be back in stowage. Will enjoy every minute of this 3.5 hour flight, that’s for sure!
Weather alert
Packing for a trip always proves to be a challenge for me. My otherwise very neat loft becomes a tornado of clothes, shoes, camera equipment and paperwork. And tonight, I’ve got the Oscars to distract me!
Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes...

It’s my last day in the office for a while, and I have a feeling it’s going to be a doozy.
